I like to think that I am a good driver. I mean, “I know how to drive”! I understand the mechanics well enough to know that “drive” means forward, “reverse” means backwards, the wheel helps me navigate and brakes are REALLY important when you want to stop. To top it all off, I have (without wanting to admit it) almost 30 years’ experience doing it successfully.
As I was sipping coffee this afternoon and reliving great memories of epic road trips with a good friend, I began to wonder “If I am such a good driver, how is it that pulling into Manhattan that very first time made me lose all equilibrium & confidence behind the wheel”? How did I go from fully competent to “please don’t let this end horribly” in the span of 30 minutes on the New Jersey turnpike?
My friend and I reminisced, laughed and discussed the chaos of that NY moment. The wrong turns, the near misses, the white knuckles and ultimately, the triumph that we felt when we drove out of the city at the end of the weekend . We not only survived but actually learned to relax a little bit in our new, crazy environment.
Sitting down at my computer this morning to plan for another challenging and exciting week of work with our various clients, I kept coming back to that road trip and how a lot of the challenges that we face in business are exactly like driving into NYNY for that very first time:
At the end of the day, what made that trip a success was not that I managed to prodigiously master the “mosh-pit ballet” that is NYC traffic…. But that I didn’t have to stare it down on my own. I had someone that I trusted, helping me find the way. An extra set of eyes to see the things that I had missed. Extra ears to hear above the deafening noise. And most importantly, a vested party who believed in my abilities & was supportive even during the “please be quiet” moments.
Over the coming weeks, we will be sharing the method that e6 has developed for navigating growth.
